With the release of his new e.p., In Your Machine, Alex Metric is deadly on a mission to destroy dancefloors—and expectations. His second e.p. for the Marine Parade label (following 2007’s acclaimed Whatshewants), Metric’s latest effort caps a stellar moment for the renowned U.K. artist/producer/DJ. He was named “remixer of 2007” by XFM’s Eddy Temple Morris, following in the heady footsteps of Jacques Le Cont, Phones, Jagz Kooner and Unkle—“fucking heroes of mine, in fact,” he says of the honor. Metric recently headlined the tastemaking London club night “Together” with D.I.M, Yuksek and Tronik Youth; with tour dates slotted for Australia, Hong Kong, and the main room at the famed Fabric, world domination appears to be solidly within young Metric’s grasp—especially as In Your Machine serves as a storming sneak preview of Metric’s upcoming artist album, due later this year. “Fuck genres, fuck fitting into a style,” he says of the uncharted territory revealed on his new grooves. “The vibe is hooky electronic music, with real songwriting—the whole reason i got into music in the first place.”

Indeed, that Metric himself sings on the e.p.’s title track is a sign of things to come; think Primal Scream meets Phoenix over oven-fresh state-of-the-art electronic funk. It’s classic Metric material—all slip ‘n slide synth squelch, rubbery robot bass lines, and Todd Edwards-style sample butchery—but the addition of his melodic, indie-influenced vocals sends the catchiness factor through the roof. “I grew up loving Zoot Woman and Discovery-era Daft Punk,” Metric explains. “They just made great, credible vocal records. People in electronic music are scared of vocals, but why be afraid people might actually sing along to one of your tunes? I wanna touch as many people as possible, and vocals allow you to do that.” The lyrics and vocal lines of “In Your Machine” represent the fruit of his intense collaboration with Bnann, the charismatic frontman of acclaimed electronic rock ‘n roll noisemakers the Infadels, more of which will appear on Metric’s debut album. “We've known each other for a while and just click in so easily when writing,” Metric explains. “I sketch out the track, and then we brainstorm the song, developing different characters for the vocals. He brings his own great weirdness to the lyrics: in olden days, Bnann would’ve been a minstrel wandering around with a guitar on his back, writing songs every step of the way. He just lives and breathes songwriting, and he's really fucking good at it.”

Despite the new song-centric approach, the rest of In Your Machine proves Metric hasn’t abandoned the club at all in his new style. The second cut, “Pins,” finds Metric at his out-and-out funkiest yet, with choppy vocal samples doing battle with shoegaze drone and ‘80s-tastic Prince-style stabs. The final track, “Deadly On A Mission,” is another Bnann collaboration—and the the one to watch out for. It’s an underground dub mix of what Metric claims is “another big vocal track from the album, one of the biggest I’ve done and probably the first single. I’m putting the dub out now to get support at the club level before i unleash the full version. It’s been slaying when I’ve played it out without a vocal, so it seems right to put out the dub right now.” With a laugh, Metric calls its combination of e-talking live bass and dirty yet soaring chords “neo euphoric 80's glitch pop.” “Think inescapable hooks, so catchy you can’t get them out of your head, via modern production with an ‘80's twist,” he explains. “I’ve found the weirder the ideas get, the better they turn out.”

It wouldn’t be weird if “Deadly On A Mission” proved Metric’s breakthrough; it’s really just the beginning, however, of what he’s poised to accomplish. His remixes from Hard-Fi, Black Daniel, Sharam Jey, GusGus, Splittr, and Elevator Suite have been riding high in dj's playlists since last year. “I’ve been though a bit of a change sonically and it’s great to see it being received in all the right places, by people i really respect,” says Metric, who will also be heard soon as the primary co-producer/songwriter of Adam Freeland’s upcoming artist album. “I remixed myself stoopid last year, and to get some recognition for it was awesome, especially following in the footsteps of producers I admire so much. I’ve learned loads, which has made me ten times hungrier to get my album out. I don’t like the fact that a lot of electronic artists don’t think beyond whatever niche they have been labeled into. Fuck that—you gotta think as big as you possibly can. I just want to make music to make people smile, I guess, and maybe sweat a little.”
