K-Swing
New York female DJ sensation K-Swing (AKA Katie Kabel) has achieved astonishing success in the North American club circuit. She has toured with the likes of Adam Freeland, Hybrid and Sandra Collins and opened for acts such as The Chemical Brothers, Darren Emerson and Josh Wink. She's also shared the stage with Evil 9, Hyper, Infusion, Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrim and countless others. She was nominated for the Best Breakthrough DJ Award at the 2004 Dancestar USA: American Dance Music Award Show and has been featured in the pages of top dance and lifestyle magazines including URB, DJ Mag (Adam Freeland called Katie “Best undiscovered DJ”), Teen Vogue and Loft.
After playing just about every major club in America and Canada, her reputation carried overseas and people took notice. In November 2005, Katie brought her signature style of impeccably programmed, deep, rhythmic and infectious break beat and house music to England's Fabric, Spectrum, Supercharged and HUM. She was also invited to provide a guest mix for UK Radio 1 "Queen of Breaks" Annie Nightingale's show, a very great honor.
Katie spent over 20 years of her life as a classically trained singer and dancer. Until recently - when her DJ career became too busy - she taught jazz, ballet, and modern dance. As a teenager, her continuous thirst for music and motion propelled her into the dance community, where she was drawn to the sounds of break beat for its deep and funky bass lines. Katie found it to offer the most freedom of movement, interpretation and self-expression of all forms of dance music. With her remarkable DJ skills and her passion for music and dance (not to mention her beauty and natural charisma), she started playing regularly at some of the American East Coast's (and particularly New York City's) top nightclubs and parties. This brings us to the present where K-Swing is no longer just a favorite on America's east coast, she has also made some serious noise across the entire nation and now in England.
In 2006 she was signed to Adam Freeland's Marine Parade record label. This was an amazing accomplishment for her as the Marine Parade sound is something very dear to her heart. With her focus on production and a track scheduled to be released in Winter 2006 (co-produced with the infamous British producer BEBER), K-Swing's career is very much on the rise.
Interview on DJ FX
Katie talks about her production techniques and more. Read the full interview here. "It's very organic. We used lots of guitars and live drums. It's got a very euphoric sound, but it has a lot of meat underneath to move the dance floor."
This Is The Sound - BPM Magazine Review - 10/10!
"Dripping in succulent tribal funk, K-Swing & Beber's "This is the Sound", out on Marine Parade Records, infuses deep breaks with a luscious, modern twist. Brilliantly produced, this sexy concoction of monstrous beats and dark, full-bodied sweetness has become an Annie Nightingale favorite, and "one of the top 5 hottest tracks in the world," according to Pete Tong. The original mix melds together the feel of a late-90's Massive with insane swirls of atmospheric juice and saucy bass. The result is a perfect peak track with huge crossover appeal. The Adam Freeland remix translates the original into a sexier, downright dirtier rendition. Definitely for the sassier headz in the house, the remix emphasizes a minimalist techno template, phatter basslines and freakier breaks. Both versions are proper genius; saturated with divine textures, and sure to take ya to the next level."
